"Monologue" (detail), 2007

I am an admirer of the Abstract Expressionists ... from Joan Mitchell's improvisational dialogues with her canvas to Brice Marden's meditative concerns of surface to Nathan Oliviera's figures of minimal narrative. My current paintings are using the figure as a vehicle to express my interest in the blurred line between the individual and the community, between conscious and subconscious awareness and between light and shadow. It is this space "between" that interests me. I draw from both the street energy outside my city studio and the isolation and meditative qualites of my upstate studio. Many times I begin with a model. Other times I will introduce a figure or figures to an existing painting when I want to express an idea more directly. Through the process of addition and subtraction I will work and rework a piece until the dialogue between me and the canvas begins to wane. I consider a painting finished when it has moved beyond me and is independent of me..
